One of three Black men held by deputies in Shelbyville, Tennessee, on February 20, 1912. As deputies began to lead the men from the courtroom to the jail, a mob that had filled the room shot them in a volley of bullets. The mob then stormed the jail office, demanding to see the bodies. The sheriff sent word that all the men were killed at the first volley, but the crowd doubted this, and the newspaper reports that the sheriff's force was outnumbered.
