Died in jail or a lockup

Name not reported

Five Black people, three of them women, were taken from a jail and hanged by a mob, according to an Arkansas report in the Eagle River Review of August 18, 1898. The jail held them when the mob took them and killed them, and the paper's account names none of them. Their deaths are recorded here as deaths in custody, because the jail that held them did not keep them from the mob.

Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched
