Ten Black men were being moved to Abbeville, South Carolina, in the custody of an officer, according to a New York Times report reprinted in the Cheyenne Daily Leader in December 1876. The Times says they had been held near Loundsville, and that they were taken from the officer and shot to death by the roadside. A dispatch from Columbia printed in the same article says the men were not lynched, as the Times reported, so the circumstances of the killing are disputed.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched (disputed). The New York Times reported that a mob took the men from officers near Loundsville and shot them, while a Columbia dispatch says the prisoners were not lynched as reported.
