Two Black men were held in the Yazoo, Mississippi, jail on pretrial status after a shooting in which two white men were killed. A mob broke into the jail on December 24, 1883, took the men from their cells and hanged them. A coroner's jury found that the men died at the hands of unknown persons, though the account says the mob made no effort to hide who they were. The mother of two of the men sent a Catholic priest to plead that the law be allowed to take its course, but this had no effect.
