A man of American Indian descent was being held in a jail in an Iowa town. Early on June 30, 1889, a mob came to the jail and demanded the keys from the sheriff. The sheriff refused, so the mob battered down the doors, took the man out and lynched him. The sheriff's refusal is the only account given of how the jail responded.
