A man held in the custody of the Custer County sheriff in Nebraska was taken from the sheriff by an armed mob of about twenty-five masked men, according to The Camden Journal of December 19, 1878. The mob tied him to a tree and burned him to death. The item does not give his name, and it does not say how the sheriff responded, whether he resisted or handed the man over.
