A New Orleans Picayune report, reprinted in The Anderson Intelligencer on April 17, 1879, says that a man held in a Texas jail was taken out by masked men and hanged. The Picayune account, as reprinted, is the source for the mob's seizure of him from custody and his killing. No family or other account of the man is given in the reprint.
