Union County Jail, Union County, South Carolina

In August 1871, a vigilance committee took several men out of the Union jail in Union, South Carolina, by force and killed them, according to a Yorkville Enquirer account that defended the action. The paper said the committee acted after a writ of habeas corpus arrived from Columbia, which the committee believed was meant to free the men. A Radical statement the paper cited alleged that ten men were taken from the jail. One man was released after a white man vouched for him.
