The person died while held at the Williamsburg County detention center in South Carolina on July 31, 2024, according to the sheriff's office, which said they were having a medical emergency in an open pod that evening. Detention deputies and EMS were said to have attempted life-saving measures before the person was taken to Black River Hospital, where, the sheriff's office said, they could not be revived.
