The Horry County Sheriff's Office said an officer found a person held at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center unresponsive in their cell at about 1 p.m. on Monday, April 22, 2024, and that the person was taken to a nearby hospital, where they died. The Horry County Coroner's Office has not released the person's name or other details. Officials said no foul play is suspected, and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is conducting an inquiry into the death.
