Sheriff Powers was taking this man, one of two Black men, from Birmingham to Mobile in October 1906 when, according to an Associated Press dispatch, about two hundred masked men met the sheriff near Richardson Switch, three miles north of Mobile. The mob took both men from the sheriff and hanged them on the spot. The dispatch reports that no one else was hurt.
