Three men held in the Bakersville jail in North Carolina were taken by a mob on the evening of January 3, 1893, according to a newspaper dispatch datelined Bakersville. The dispatch says the sheriff's posse fought the mob, and a second account says the sheriff's guard resisted the demand for the men before the mob broke into the jail. The mob took the men out of the jail and killed them, and neither report gives their names. A Chattanooga dispatch published in the same paper called the reported killings a fake.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched (disputed). A Bakersville correspondent reports that a mob broke into the jail, dragged him out and shot and hanged him; a Chattanooga dispatch in the same paper called the reported killings a fake.
Reported by: Bakersville correspondent, Wheeling Daily Intelligencer (reporters).
