Three Black men held in the custody of the sheriff were being escorted down the courthouse steps after a preliminary hearing when a mob attacked the sheriff and six deputies. The mob killed one of the men on the steps and beat the other two badly. Later the mob broke into the sheriff's office, where the wounded men had been taken, and fired on them. Two of the men were still alive while people feared the mob would storm the jail.
