Four Black soldiers of a regiment stationed near Asheville were held at the county jail. According to Judge E. S. Aston, the mayor at the time, as reported by the St. Louis Globe-Democrat in June 1891, they were taken from their cells the next morning, seated on rough coffins, and shot by a firing squad of soldiers before a large crowd. The report says a burial service was read and the four were buried at once, two to a box.
