A person held at the Surry County Detention Center had a medical emergency inside the jail early on Friday, January 27, 2023. Major Scott Hudson of the Surry County Sheriff's Office said the person was taken to Northern Regional Hospital and died about five hours after arriving. The sheriff's office called the cause a medical emergency. The death was the third at the center in less than a year, after two earlier deaths there in 2022.
