A man was placed in an Alabama jail on Wednesday, June 13, 1883, according to a dispatch datelined Salem, Alabama, June 16 and published in the Press and Daily Dakotaian on June 18. That night, a crowd of several hundred people took him from the jail and killed him. The dispatch does not say whether the jailer or officers resisted the crowd or gave up the keys.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A dispatch in the Times says a crowd of several hundred took a man from the jail the night after citizens had placed him there.
