A Black person held in the custody of the sheriff at Colombia, Louisiana, was taken from the sheriff by a party of people on May 18, 1889, and hanged to a tree. The Hope Pioneer reported the killing on May 24, 1889. Their death was carried out by the group that took them from the jail, not by any court.
