A Black man was held by officers at Bluefield when a mob took him from them on the evening of Saturday, September 14, 1889, and hanged him. The Beatrice Daily Express, which reported the killing on September 17, said the officers were overpowered. The mob took him from the officers' custody, and the paper attributes the killing to that crowd.
