Early on Sunday, August 14, 1887, about thirty masked men came to the Lenox, Iowa jail, where a man was being held. The sheriff refused to hand over the keys, so the mob broke the jail's locks with sledges and hammers and took him from his cell. They carried him to a bridge at the west edge of town, put a rope around his neck and hanged him from it. He was left hanging until he died, according to the Omaha Daily Bee.
