An unidentified man, about thirty years old, was held in the Billings jail in Montana in July 1891. According to the coroner's inquest jury, a masked mob held up the jailer, battered the jail doors down with a sledge, and hanged him from a telegraph pole on the edge of town. The coroner cut him down the next morning, and the jury returned a verdict of death by hanging at the hands of persons unknown. In January 1892, Judge Milburn charged a grand jury to investigate the killing, which he called murder in the first degree, and the members of the mob had not been identified.
