A young Black man held in a jail linked to Castlewood, Virginia, was taken from it by a mob on Saturday, June 7, 1884, and hanged. The Daily Enterprise reported his death in a brief item published June 13, 1884. The account says a mob took him from the jail and killed him there in a public hanging.
