Died in jail or a lockup
Name not reported
A mob took five people of Italian origin from the jail at Tallula, Louisiana, and hanged them, according to the President's annual message to Congress, as reprinted in several newspapers in December 1899. The message names none of the five and gives no date for the killings. It says state authorities and representatives of the Italian embassy each investigated the killings separately. None of these accounts says whether the jailer or sheriff resisted the mob, gave up the keys, or handed the men over.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched
Reported by: President's annual message to Congress, as reprinted in the paper.
