Chester County Detention Center, Chester County, South Carolina

According to a 1871 Portland Daily Press account of the congressional Ku Klux Klan investigation, several prisoners held in the Chester jail in South Carolina were taken out by force by a vigilance committee and killed. The same paper, citing an Associated Press report, said ten Black men were taken from a South Carolina jail by several hundred Klan members and killed, and that the congressional committee investigating Klan violence looked into the killings. One of those taken from the Chester jail was released after white men declared he was believed innocent.

Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched (disputed). The Portland Daily Press, reporting on Judge Van Trump's congressional Ku Klux Klan subcommittee account, says a vigilance committee took prisoners from the Chester jail by force and executed them, while the paper disputes a partisan claim of ten killings.
