According to a St. Paul dispatch reprinted in the Canton Weekly Register in September 1857, a mob at Little Falls, Minnesota, took one of three men held in the sheriff's custody and hanged him to a tree. The report names the jail-held men only as a group, and it gives no name for the man who was killed. The same dispatch, dated August 21, 1857, was the source for the account of the hanging. Whether the sheriff resisted the mob, gave up the keys, or handed the man over is not stated in the report.
