Two Black sons of Saunders Flint were held in the Monroe County jail in Mississippi while awaiting trial when, in August 1870, a gang of about fifty men in disguise broke open the jail, took the two men out and killed them. The account, drawn from testimony by Col. A. P. Huggins in the Ku-Klux sworn statements and printed in The Du Quoin Tribune in October 1871, does not name the sons. It does not say whether the jailer or sheriff resisted the mob, gave up the keys, or handed the men over.
