According to a first-person account published in the Chicago Daily Tribune on May 20, 1862, an elderly man and his son were taken from the jail where the correspondent was being held and marched out by armed guards. The correspondent says the two were hanged on the same gallows, and that the father was made to watch his son hang before he was hanged himself. The man is described in the account as a Methodist class leader. The account was written by a prisoner, and no official record of the deaths is cited, so the identities, date and location of the hangings and who gave the order remain unestablished.

Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A Chicago Daily Tribune correspondent, held in the same jail, says a mob took an elderly man and his son from the jail and hanged them.

Reported by: Chicago Daily Tribune correspondent (witnesses).
