A man held in a Wyoming jail was taken out by a mob on April 13, 1879, and killed. According to the Chicago Daily Tribune, the lynchers let him choose how he would die, and he climbed a telegraph pole, tied a noose and jumped. The paper reported that a coroner's jury might call the death a suicide, but it said the crowd gathered at the foot of the pole was guilty of aiding and abetting it.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched (disputed). The newspaper account says a crowd of lynchers took the man from a Wyoming jail and he hanged himself from a telegraph pole, though a coroner's jury might call it suicide while the paper holds the crowd guilty of aiding and abetting.
