A man who had been preparing for heart valve replacement surgery was held at a county jail, where his surgery plans continued, before being sent to an Illinois state prison. According to an ACLU of Illinois attorney, prison staff did not review the letter from his cardiologist, misdiagnosed his heart problem, and he died about six months later. The account comes from a court-appointed doctor's review filed in a class-action lawsuit over health care at the Illinois Department of Corrections. The department declined to comment on the pending litigation.
