A 24-year-old man with mental illness died while held at an Illinois Department of Corrections prison. The ACLU of Illinois says medical staff saw him for abdominal pain and an inability to eat after he swallowed two plastic utensils, and that he went untreated while losing more than 50 pounds. He was found unresponsive and hospitalized, and the utensils were found at autopsy. Citing a court-appointed expert review in Lippert v. Godinez, the ACLU says deaths like his were preventable.
