One of 4 people whose names were not reported
One of four Italian men held in the Walesburg jail in Colorado was killed on March 12, 1895, when a mob ambushed the wagon carrying the prisoners back from a coroner's inquest at Rouse. Accounts reported by the Chieftain say rifles opened fire at Beaver Creek and the officers returned fire. A coroner's jury later found that the killing was carried out by parties unknown. A Denver dispatch reported that two Italians were taken from the jail.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched (disputed). A coroner's jury returned a verdict that the killing was done by parties unknown, and the Chieftain dispatch says a mob in ambush shot the prisoners on the road from a coroner's inquest, while a Denver dispatch says two Italians were taken from the jail, so accounts differ on the circumstances and number killed.
Reported by: coroner's jury (medical examiner or coroner); Chieftain dispatch (reporters); Denver dispatch (reporters).
