Died in jail or a lockup
Name not reported
According to a newspaper report published on December 8, 1881, a Black man held in a North Carolina jail near Raleigh was taken from the jail by a masked party of about 100 men and lynched. He was one of two men held there at the time. Because the report is brief and the only account I have, the mob's actions and the jail's response are described only in that single report.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched
