In 2016, a 65-year-old man held in state custody was being escorted by a correctional officer with his hands cuffed behind his back, according to federal prosecutors. Prosecutors say the officer pulled his legs out from under him, and he fell face-first onto concrete, breaking his jaw and several teeth. He died two days later in a hospital from a pulmonary embolism, which federal prosecutors list as the cause of death and tie to the use of force. The officer was later the subject of a federal case over his conduct toward incarcerated people.
