In August 1857, a telegraphic dispatch from St. Paul, Minnesota, reported that a mob took one of three men from a sheriff near Little Falls and hanged him from a tree. The dispatch, dated August 24 and printed in the Daily National Intelligencer on August 25, gives no name, age or other detail about the man. It also does not say how the sheriff responded to the mob.
