A young Black man was held in the jail of a Louisiana cross-roads town in July 1934. According to a Washington Daily News editorial, a mob battered down the jail door, took him from his cell, slit his throat and hanged him from a tree. The editorial says the prosecuting attorney and the sheriff only meekly remonstrated with the mob. The sheriff later said he did not recognize any member of it.
