A young man held at the Deadwood jail was taken from his cell by a vigilante group and hanged, strung up beside another man. Accounts say he was roughly handled as he was taken out, which broke open his wounds again. Before he was hanged, he begged to be allowed to send one word to his mother, who was in the east, and his pleas were ignored.
