The sheriff's office did not resist: a mob broke into the jail at Fort Mason and took the men held there. The man, whose name is not given, was one of several men held in the jail, and the mob put them on horses and rode about a mile and a half to a large tree, where they were hanged. An account written decades later says five of the men were dead when the rope party left. The source gives no date for the events and no name for him.
