Four Black men held in the Wetumpka jail in Elmore County, Alabama, were taken from the jail by a mob in June 1898 and killed. The Age-Herald reported that the mob broke into the jail and hanged one of them on the morning of June 17, 1898. Other accounts give June 16 as the night the mob took the men, and one brief item reports a mob of about 150 lynching five people from the jail, so the date and number are disputed. Troops sent from Montgomery were reported to have arrived too late to stop the mob. The governor sent a state solicitor to Wetumpka to seek indictments of the lynchers.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A mob took the men from the Wetumpka jail and hanged them, according to the Daily Kentuckian and a telephone message from Wetumpka reported by the paper.
