A man held in the custody of an Indiana sheriff was taken from that custody by a mob and lynched, according to a January 1903 editorial in The Birmingham Age-Herald. The editorial does not give his name, the date of his death, or the place where it happened. It reports that the Indiana governor suspended the sheriff over the lynching and later declined to reinstate him.
