In 1903, a mob took the person held at the Cañon City jail on First street in Fremont County, Colorado, from the jail and hurried them off toward South Cañon. The following morning they were found hanging from a cottonwood tree near the foothills, a few hundred yards southwest of the First street bridge, where the mob had hanged them. Their body was taken down about noon the next day and turned over to the coroner for burial.
