On August 31, 1894, six people held in the custody of a sheriff were taken from his posse about two miles west of Wellington, where the sheriff was bringing them to town in a wagon, handcuffed and chained. The account says about fifty armed, masked men stopped the posse and shot all six. The sheriff said he did not know any of the men in the mob. Officials said every effort would be made to bring the mob members to justice, and one of the six is described in the report as Black, though the account gives no name.
