On October 23, 1879, a mob of more than 200 men surrounded a jail in Kentucky, overpowered the jailor, and took a man held there from his cell and hanged him. He was the second of two men held at the jail that night. The Phoenix Herald's account of the killing gives no name for him and no other details about who he was. The account says the mob overpowered the jailor, but it does not say whether the jailor or other staff resisted, gave up the keys, or handed him over.
