Several men held at the Florence jail in Florence, Arizona, were to be moved to Phoenix for safekeeping under a court order, and guards from Tucson were sent to escort them. When the escort arrived at about 3 a.m., the under sheriff refused to hand over the prisoners without the sheriff present. The Arizona Republican reported in 1921 that mobs kept menacing the jail through the night. After the guard was withdrawn on the order of Marshal Evans, the men were taken from the jail and hanged.
