People who knew him regarded him as a quiet man. He was about 25 years old when, in January 1859, a mob took him from the jail where he was being held and hanged him by the neck. According to the Memphis Daily Appeal, another man was taken from the same jail at the same time and was found hanged beside him. The newspaper reported the deaths as homicides.
