Campbell and his brother were held in the Munfordsville jail in Hart County, Kentucky, in December 1880, according to a Horse Cave dispatch printed in the Memphis Daily Appeal. The dispatch reports that around midnight about 100 men took both men from the jail and hanged them from a tree. Neither account names the brother, and The Daily Dispatch repeats the same account of his death without further detail. The sheriff's or jailer's response to the crowd is not described in either report.
