The elder Tarpey, uncle of the plaintiff in a long dispute between the Tarpey and Nickolson families over a Monterey County ranch, was held at the Watsonville jail. The San Francisco Call reported in 1911 that friends of Nickolson broke into the jail, took Tarpey from his cell and killed him. The newspaper gives no date for his death.
