Two men held in the Southampton County jail in Virginia were taken from the jail by a mob. According to a dispatch datelined Petersburg, the mob hanged them on Friday night, December 23, 1881. The account was printed in the Sacramento Daily Record-Union on December 29, 1881.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A Petersburg dispatch reports that a mob took two men from the Southampton County jail and hanged them.
