A man held in Alabama's state convict system died in January 1896 in a mine accident at the slope at the Pratt mines. Judson Davie, the state's physician-inspector of convicts, attributed the death to an accident and said such deaths are hard to prevent, as reported by the Birmingham State Herald in April 1896. No name is given for him.
