A baby girl died in 2018 while her mother, Meagan Deadrich, was held at the Salt Lake County Metro Jail in Salt Lake City, Utah, at 26 weeks pregnant. Deadrich says her bleeding began days after she was booked and that she repeatedly asked for help but did not see a doctor. A jail clinic later could not find a heartbeat, and the baby was confirmed dead at a hospital, where Deadrich was taken in handcuffs. Her mother's lawsuit against the county, the sheriff and the jail says the jail failed to provide proper care, and the sheriff's office denies this.
Cause of death, as reported: Died of illness (disputed; neglect alleged). The mother's lawsuit says jail staff ignored her bleeding and repeated requests for help and did not get her to a doctor before the baby died, while the sheriff's office denies failing to provide care.
Reported by: Mother's lawsuit against the county, sheriff and jail (family or their lawyers).
Lawsuit: Meagan Deadrich sued Salt Lake County, its sheriff and the Salt Lake County Metro Jail over the death of her baby.
