A 51-year-old man died on May 20, 2022, after Escambia County Sheriff's Office deputies took him into custody for a mental health evaluation in Escambia County, Florida. Sheriff Chip Simmons said deputies noticed he was in distress after he was taken into custody. The sheriff said one deputy has been fired and two others are under investigation. The autopsy and a Florida Department of Law Enforcement review were still pending when the report was published.
