died September 1873 · Vermilion Parish, Louisiana

In September 1873, a man held in the jail at Abbeville, in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana, was taken out by a vigilance group and hanged, according to 1873 newspaper accounts reprinted in the Rapides Gazette and the New Iberia Sugar-Bowl. The papers report that the group acted after the governor reportedly said they could do what the circumstances required, and that others were hanged with him. The accounts disagree about how many people were killed.

Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched (disputed). The Rapides Gazette, reprinting the New Iberia Sugar Bowl, says a vigilance group from Abbeville hanged a prisoner taken from jail, while the Sugar Bowl itself calls its account of the wider events rumor and says the jailer's response is not stated; the number killed is disputed.
